Why iPhone podcasts are fiddly to edit
Each phone starts recording at a different moment, and their clocks do not agree, so timecode cannot line them up. Over a long episode the phones also drift apart by a few frames. And every phone's microphone sounds a little different. Lining that up by hand takes longer than the conversation did.
What CastCut does with them
- Lines the phones up by sound, then keeps them in sync to the last minute.
- Uses the clearest audio. With no separate recorder, it picks the phone that sounds best and uses it for the whole episode.
- Cuts to whoever is talking, and gives each person a close-up out of a wide phone if you filmed one.
- Takes out the dead air, ums and false starts if you want, and finds the moments worth posting.
A simple two-iPhone setup
- One phone per person, facing them, or one wide phone plus one close-up.
- Both phones in the same video setting, 4K at 30 fps if you have the space.
- Do Not Disturb on, so a call does not stop the recording.
- A mic or recorder makes it sound better but is not required.
- Start both, have the conversation, stop both. No clap needed.

Questions
Do I need a clapper or to start both iPhones at once?
No. CastCut lines the phones up from the sound itself, whenever each one started.
Do I need an external microphone?
No. With no recorder, CastCut uses the phone that sounds clearest. A lav or a recorder still sounds better if you have one.
Can I edit on the iPhone itself?
No. CastCut runs on a Mac with Apple silicon. The finished videos come back to your iPhone with AirDrop.
Can I mix an iPhone with a camera or an Android phone?
Yes. Any mix of phones and cameras works, synced by sound.
How long does it take?
A minute or two for the multicam edit on a recent Mac, and a few minutes more for the reels.
